@pintohoo - the majority of people are better than that! Even though I don't hold with traditional religions; I believe that we have kindness in abundance, I believe, have to keep on believing that we can do better.
That's all I have to say to those two horrible stories, facts!! even though I am devastated about the examples you cite - there is hope that the people who perpetrated these acts will wake up one day and will be sorry and will - maybe- try to make restitution.

As an aside; this morning I listened to an interview of an Irish Officer in charge of the supervisory military in Lebanon, he was Irish - I cannot remember his name, but he explained that the 'Blue Zone' is a strip of land between Israel and Lebanon which is a demilitarised zone, and a no-go zone to both parties. He also explained that Hezbollah as well as Hamas are entrenched in their various communities, providing health care, schooling, welfare etc. to their communities - they are right in the middle of 'normal' life hence Israel has no other option but to target all those areas.

Re your second example: It is also a fact that some people join the army and become professional soldiers because the 'business' of killing attracts them, the majority of military are 'normal', but the profession does attract psychopaths. If we could target those people and had definite ways of predicting their behaviour, we could get rid of them - but then there is the school of thought that they 'are better off away from normal society' leading a way of life to which they naturally incline and towards which society at large still pays lip service and in a dim way, feels that they are protectors/heroes etc. etc. It is us, the general public, who need to change our attitude.

I am so sad about that little girl and all the other little children, girls and boys, killed and even those who survive bear not only physical scars but mental ones from which will spring the next generation of 'freedom' fighters.
