I'm old enough to remember when cyclone Tracey hit Darwin on Christmas eve 1974. Gough Whitlam was Prime Minister, and even though I despise almost everything he did, and blame him for a lot of the welfare culture today, he showed leadership then when the country was in dismay and shock.

I mentioned the disaster happening right now in rural eastern Australia, but neither of the two shocks seem to be resonating at all in Canberra. The silence and leadership is deafening, its bizarre.
