that the current numbers will become thousands a week - how do you know that?

if we transport them from indonesia there will be no need for people smugglers - it would stop the boats before they start and cut out the illegal trade. once the government has control of the situation, it will be much easier to deal with

no - i don not accept that - why do so many of the asylum seekers who come by air fail to get refugee status - clearly, because thy are not genuine refugees. and yet, they have "genuine" visas - someone is doing a roaring trade in very well forged documents good enough to fool officers at airports but not good enough to stand up to detailed scrutiny. by pushing everyone onto planes you are merely transferring one crime (people smugglers) to another (document forgers). that solves nothing

this problem needs to be met head on if it is ever going to be dealt with properly. both government so far have concentrated on bandaid and redneck bogan vote winning solutions - short-termism. we need a long term, permanent policy because there is no doubt that this refugee problem will go on for years.

we need a logical solution, not one dictated by prejudice, xenophobia, ideology (or worse) - one that will actually allow us to deal with the situation rather than react to it
