That's interesting. ZIP competes with Afterpay, Klarna, Affirm and who knows who else and although they line their platforms up against each other they have to compete with each other to get front row space in the big merchants, meaning they have to compete with card issuers and their lower merchant fees, so it's a race to the bottom while they try to build their profile.
In this material they say
1/ they are looking to serve smaller merchants which are not served by the incumbents
2/ they are looking to get an average 8% take from the merchant volume. That is huge. In Australia and the US average BNPL charges to merchants range between 2% and 8%, but are 3.5% and credit cards are 1.25% - 1.5%.
The plan is to go for the smallest merchants willing to pay the highest price to access BNPL. Tight
