The private hospital system is mostly for non-emergency / elective surgery with some exceptions like specialised cardiac and oncology hospitals, it isn't designed for emergency treatment or dealing with general ailments that a GP should probably be dealing with.
Without the private hospital system the public system in Australia would collapse almost immediately and Healthscope is the second biggest operator
