Labour governments wont build dams becasue there are no votes in it for them. They are expensive to build, serve no purpose except for once in 30 years when there is a flood, and the farmers that benefit from irrigation most likely vote National party anyway. Labour also has the problem of being controlled by the Greens now, who are more concerned about critters than people and are therefore anti-dams. What really galls me is that the justification (pros and cons) for building a dam should be argued by engineers in the relevant government departments and not by ignorant self-serving politicians of any creed. The politicans should sit above the technical arguments and they should only make their recommendations when the arguments have been properly presented by the right people.
