Several of Chile's largest private mining companies have opted for the new copper royalty structure, Mining Minister Laurence Golborne said Wednesday.
The Escondida copper mine, controlled by BHP Billiton Ltd, is the first mine to adopt the new tax structure, which will increase the average income tax it currently pays by two to four percentage points, depending on international copper prices. The Minister's announcement comes after BHP Billiton said earlier this week it will switch to the new structure. Among the companies adopting the modified tax are Antofagasta PLC, Anglo American PLC, Xstrata plc, and Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. (FCX).
