He’s clearly got more than a few bucks to invest. He could have just kept that $800k (still a lot of money to anyone) if he thought this was going south in the long term (noting he’s more across what’s going on than us). I’m sure he’d rather not lose any of it, despite his wealth. And he’s probably not exercising just to make a quick $150k which is a drop in the ocean for him (prob don’t think he’s instantly sold them).
Perhaps, as a busy man, he’s just forgotten about them with all that he’s handling at the moment with PME and all the going ons there over the past few years, along with his other commitments. Perhaps, the company secretary emailed him in advance and said “Hi Sam, do you remember those 2m options you’ve held since IPO, they are about to expire, so just checking if you wanted to exercise them before they expire in a couple of weeks’ time.”
He’s probably not constantly tracking and analysing all his options and their terms (including expiry dates) along with how they compare with the current market value (like some of us might have the time for) - given their value relative to his wealth.
