I am conflicted here for a number of reasons. I have a son who is an officer in the RAN. I know enough about subs to know that diesels just won't do it. Neither will drones or unmanned with current tech. If you are going to bother at all, it must be nuclear powered. So we have 3 choices :
1) Aukus
2) Wait and procrastinate (again)
3) Don't bother
My preference is for 1). It is far better to be inside the room. Let's see where it takes us. It is bullshit to say that we can't pull out - we can, but if we do, that is it, end of story.
Having the UK in the agreement gives me a little more comfort than if it was with the US alone, for obvious reasons.
Whilst it might be unthinkable now to consider nuclear weapons on these subs, who knows what the future holds.
