I agree that EV production and operation creates some climate change gases
but the argument here in favor of EVs is relative....not absolute

And besides, given that we are virtually reliant on import petrol & diesel, EVs
address National Security issues should there be a rapid disruption in
the fuel supply chain due to geopolitical conflict.

IMO, National Security is also a major consideration for China going EVs.

Now work it out over the average length of time a car is owned... and of course the average is not the median... Then it gets even sillier...
