I have noticed this phenomena as well.
I tend to more closely follow tech stocks but have now seen multiple examples of stocks having a run, entering the ASX200, and becoming targeted by shorter's with seemingly unlimited capital, who proceed to slaughter them over the next couple of years.
It's like the entry into the index paints a target on the stock's back and it becomes a gauntlet which applies increased pressure that many companies cannot endure.
I guess its just survival of the fittest but these days I shudder at the thought of entering the indexes and coming to the notice of the wolves.
