You would expect the floods 100 years ago to be higher because they did not have the Somerset or Wivenhoe dams to hold them back.
Take away the Wivenhoe and this flood would definitely have exceeded 1974 (It was only 1 metre below WITH the Wivenhoe) Take away the Somerset as well and this would have been the biggest since records began.
