They get paid either way - and they can just come back and say there is no one interested and terminate the contract. They don't really lose.
I suspect half the companies they contract with don't get positive news anyway.
I wonder if MM does not go to conferences anymore because she is "retiring". She did say she would do that after the trial results were released but maybe the BOD has told her she has to stay until the bitter end.
