Exploring for oil reserves isn't that difficult, any explorer will tell you they have leads on plenty of big reserves. It's getting to them, then getting it out, that's the tough and expensive part of the business. In this case, they followed the bread crumbs or other major companies to this field and researched from there. As I said, the blind freddy of oil explorers knows there's oil there, its management's task to turn that in to a profitable business with the best result for its share holders. Not simply find it, fence it, and sell the rights to a better managed company to get it out.
