26th January celebrates the landing of the First Fleet in Botany Bay. A significant event no doubt but only the Eastern side of New Holland was claimed by the British.
Australia was not formed on that day.
Nor was it formed on January 1 1901 on Federation, as we were still a colony of Britain.
The true date when Australia fully became an equal nation with the other nations of the world was when Australia was an original signatory of the Treaty of Versailles which was signed on 28th June 1919.
Thus "Australia Day" should imho be celebrated on this date as this was when we stood as an equal nation with all other members of the League of Nations.
