Coarse nuggety gold requires a special type of assay - a "screen fire" which means that both the fine fraction of the crushed sample (standard screen size of 70-100micron) (the fine fraction pass through the screen - this is what normally gets sampled in a fire assay (gold assay). But when the gold is nuggety and large, the assay also needs to assy the coarse fraction (the stuff that doesn't pass through the screen) because the gold grade is higher. Typcially in a screen fire assay, two standard fire assays are undertaken, but the main show is the calculation of the amount of gold in the fine and coarse fractions (rather than just the fine fraction). So all of the gold is actually assayed. Typically this also uses more of the available core as well, so it's also a better represtentative sample. If the KNB team do not undertake screen fire assays on these, the gold will be strongly underreported. I have seen assays go from 0.1g/t (Fire Assay) to >50g/t Au when screen fired. Hope that explains it easily enought to understand
