BP aims to drill 40 exploration wells in next three years
"BP aims to boost investments in exploration drilling after failing to spend enough in recent years and is also eyeing entry into new plays and geographies as it beefs up its neglected E&P portfolio. William Lin, head of the supermajor’s gas and low carbon business, told analysts on Wednesday how the company is ramping up its exploration spend in the coming years as it strives to hunt down new resources and boost its reserve replacement ratio. “Our exploration success over the past few years has not been what we would have liked,” he admitted during the company’s capital markets day, but pointed out that this is about to change. “As we look ahead, we are planning to step up investment in exploration — including in seismic — to reload and enhance our oil and gas hopper within our existing basins, as well as in regions and geographies where we do not currently have upstream activity.”
Lin said BP is planning to drill around 40 wells over the next three years, 10-to-15 of which will be drilled in 2025. Key wells will be drilled in the US Gulf, Brazil, Libya, Egypt, Angola and Namibia, augmenting wells planned for Canada, Trinidad & Tobago, the UK, Norway, Azerbaijan, Oman, India, Australia and Indonesia. Turning to developments, Lin said BP will bring on stream 10 major oil and gas projects by 2027, with a total peak net production of around 250,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. In addition, the company's joint ventures in Norway, Angola and Argentina will start up seven projects, with eight-to-10 developments set to be in operation in the 2028-2030 timeframe. “The average internal rate of return that we expect from this next wave of major projects is over 20%, well above our 15% hurdle rate,” Lin said."
I wonder whether the ~800-2000m water depth is somewhat of an 'Orange Basin Goldilocks zone'?
