Just to add, shorting could make sense if a company had a share purchase plan announced- those usually cause a decline in SP. There's loads of times one could bet that a SP could fall... profit downgrades, poor company news. But betting on a SP decline on a SPP doesn't seem to be betting against a company, if that's what people don't like about shorting.
