Opaline, if the only form of CO2 being introduced into the atmosphere was through burning fossils fuels, then your description of CO2 as a pollutant might make some sense, but it is not and thus does not, make sense that is. By a magnitude of about 30 times, the CO2 released by natural processes from the oceans, and plants and the soil exceeds that released through the combustion of fossil fuels.
Given the variations of atmospheric CO2 due to seasonal changes in the rate of sequestration and release through natural processes, there exists with plants and soil alone, a capacity to sequester far greater amounts of CO2 than what is being released through human activity.
