Thanks for the post. Seems to put both sides of the argument well.
Santana had a stand at the Wanaka A&P show (agriculture and produce show), which is a big event for Wanaka and attended by many south islanders. (Wanaka is a 20 minute drive from Tarras). I went to the stand twice during the show to ask questions and each time the stand had many interested people from the area in it. Many of them were existing shareholders(including myself). This was a perfect place for locals who were against the mine to protest but not one person said anything negative while I was there.
The article in the paper is highlighting the objection of a small group of vocal people in the area, not the opinions of the majority-squeaky wheel!
I live in Wanaka and from discussions I have had with other locals, I think what is going on with the Tarras group isn’t gaining the momentum that the airport objections mentioned in the article gained from the community.
The airport had obvious implications for locals as jets make a lot of noise arriving and departing from airports-as a result many of us locals were unsure as to how it would impact their day to day lives and objected. This mine will have little to no day to day impact on central Otago residents, except maybe more traffic on the roads and more people in the supermarkets.
FYI, If the open cut mine application isn’t approved, Santana will then apply for a permit for a closed mine………..but I don’t agree with the argument that an open cut mine would be a light on the landscape visible to tourists as the fly into Queenstown-it would be amazing to see from the air-not unlike the dust bowl at the top of the mountain in summer that is Cardrona ski resort in winter.
