Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is expected to visit Far North Queensland today with plans to visit the flood-affected communities. Two people have died, and hundreds of properties, businesses and farmland have been hit with a deluge of rain in a catastrophic wet weather event. More than 10,000 homes in the small rural town of Ingham have been without power and running water for several days. Though conditions have begun to ease, the town is reeling after being battered by over 1,000mm of relentless rainfall.
Anthony Albanese has activated emergency disaster recovery support for flood-ravaged victims in Far North Queensland, with both the state and federal governments also committing $8m of funding to affected communities.
From 2pm Thursday local time, eligible residents in Cardwell, Giru and Hinchinbrook LGA who have suffered serious damage or injury will be able to access payments of $1000 per adult and $400 per child. Applications can be made through myGov.
