''someone who lives, eats and breathes Australia's core values including "... a fair go and equal opportunity for all ...".

    but, they aren't

they are NOT Australia's core values. They are things that we like to 'think' are core values ---------- but, they are not.

They are values of 'some' people - Helen Haines may well be one of them - but, they are NOT the base cultural values of the vast majority of people

and there, for me - lies the basic problem for Australia.

It is by far, probably the most important thing that I've learned about my country from travel. Some (yes, some, not all) nations actually DO have such concepts as core values ---------- but, Australia - does not.

Australians want their kids educated - so they can get a better job - which actually means a bigger pay. And they want that for their kids so their kids can buy a better or bigger house to be able to have more stuff than what their parents could afford. And that ----------- is it. That's the sum total of drive for living.

In other nations - people also want their kids educated - so they can get a better job, a meaningful job - so that 'everyone' in the nation can have a better life.

That - is what actually having core values does - as opposed to just 'saying' that these are the values - but, not living them.
