In the long term blanket tariffs I do not like, simply as they are a bad way to do business, but I do think tariffs are a necessary tool to balance trade on an individual basis
Back in the 50s & 60s we had tariffs and the government was open with the manufacturing sector in that they would tell them that if they could produce an imported article at the same quality and a similar price they would slap a tariff on the import to make it more expensive
This is I believe just good business in looking after your own industry and jobs and to combat those countries that encouraged slave labor
