I would not be jumping on @310843B that is true enough. As @CbrMaroon, @ewop123@prhb, @westmount know I am not convinced of NAB's potential to survive in current form. These tariffs have the ability to cause the Greatest Depression in human history and Australia may not be able to bail out NAB, arguably one of the least stable of the Aussie Big 4 banks.
The Big 4 banks rely on the Australian Government for the Four Pillars Policy and that 75% deposit backed guarantee. How can an Australian Government pay its debt if ever called upon to provide support?
The banking system in Australia, including NAB, is not systemically strong.
In times of the Greatest Depression or even Recession (which 2007-2013, the last time banks in australia were bailed out thru guarantee, it wasn't a Recession in Australia, it was a Great Recession almost everywhere else), the ability of the Government to service a bailout would be IMHO limited.
Would people pay more excessive tax than they do now to bail out the bankers?
CBA, ANZ, NAB and also WBC are susceptible to failing as well as any other banks. Else, why did the Rudd Government so eagerly issue a bailout bank guarantee in the 2007-2013 crisis and the Hawke Government come up with the Four Pillars Policy as a response to the 1980s recession where the banks could have expired?
CBA as the largest bank is not too big to fail. We saw that in the 2007-2009 Great Recession with the demise and destruction of shareholder wealth of banks and brokers like Bank of America, Merrill Lynch, Lehman Brothers, Citibank, Wells Fargo, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Australian retail banking, especially the Big 4 banks look more like Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Bank of America and Citibank. Freddie and Fannie did not survive.
Citi became a shell, the current Bank of America would be like merging CBA, ANZ and NAB into 1 bank.
You might end up with 2 big banks in Australia and NAB equity holders would be almost wiped out if not entirely.
