Buybacks should not ever be initiated/undertaken to "protect their shareholders"....they're there or should only be undertaken to increase the net value of the remaining equity for shareholders. I wish all shareholders would realise this. It is not about putting a line under the share price & temporarily supporting the share price in the market but taking advantage of allocating company capital to where its returns are most rewarded/enhanced. Now it's definitely not in drilling new wells. The largest returns are in buying back it's own equity
