For travel in Europe, particularly France -- I'm very big on car travel.

    Foot, bike, car. Why?

my very best experiences - all of them, have been out in the boonies. Yes, some of them, one could have got a taxi to, got a tour to, used a train to an area then hired a car, walked to or bicycled to - but, practically - the car is the only real way.

Most of the memorable have been from little things like needing lunch and stuck out in the wilderness with one tiny towns - and finding an absolute classic in a very quiet place where there's no rail, no buses and no nuttin really.

Even this last trip to Verdun taking a French friend there - a very well travelled French friend- who has been to most parts of france for work, pleasure and living. Is on the inventory of the Louvre after spending so much time there and has spent heaps of time in Paris. Knows London extremely well.

We went to Verdun - and one place which we went to - yes, one could get a tour or a taxi or have gone to Verdun and then hired a car - but, we went by car --

I'd been to the Douaumont Ossuary a couple of times before - including staying overnight in the car park - but, I'd never been inside.

This time - we went one day, walked the outside and then, next day came back and went inside -

OMG - what an experience. I never expected what we walked into. It pretty much defies description. After a few minutes - I went up to my friend - and said - have you ever seen anything like this? - They said no, nothing remotely like it.

Well, yes, one could make one's way there using public transport - but, in the car - easy.

The little towns in the boonies - easy. By other means - not easy at all. And there lies the real France IMO.

Your comments on Australia - for me - the way outback - there, I feel remote.

On Turkmenistan - I didn't see any big water usage there - I must have missed something.
