Interim results don't fall out of the sky. They're not an earthquake. They need to collate the data, clean it, review it and potentially undertake some form of informal peer review. This has to be planned, initiated, and managed with multiple centres and participants/contributors. We know they've planned to do this because they have kept us informed about upcoming data drops, for months, at multiple opportunities.
So yes, they can in fact know there is upcoming news (because they planned it), when it might be disclosed (because they planned it), and even understand what that news is (because they are party to the analysis as it is generated) before it's disclosed to the market.
