Glad you referenced that Ponzi - as I was reading your post I thought this sounds very much like Roger Montgomery stuff.
You might also like to consider the following. I can't remember where I read this either Montgomery or Buffet (Montgomery is a Buffet fan anyhow) but one of them made the point that EBIT is a dumb thing.
Earnings Before Interest & Tax (you can also add depreciation and amortisation EBITDA).
Anyhow, the point was, why use EBIT as a measure? What's the point of talking about earnings before interest and tax? Who's going to pay the interest and tax - the tooth fairies? If you think about it EBIT is a BS figure.
