@kingpins - so sad to read that someone can go through the entire schooling process without the ability to read? Where on earth did he go to school??
I 'penned' my first picture post card to my parents aged 6 - more spelling mistakes than words - I found it in my Mum's possession when i went over to organise her funeral and clear her flat - still have it, she had kept it all those years of my absence in a 'foreign' country . . .
btw, I arrived here knowing fairly good English, had worked in Britain for a year as a domestic in a hospital (actually dining room maid) and attended weekly English courses run by a Cambridge teacher . . l. so I had a pretty good accent, still have.
My first memory is of a precious blue flower growing in the mountains of the Caucasus - seen in a movie, called 'the Stone Flower' - in fact it was a fairy tale about the green stone from Asia, which is sometimes blue, but rare in that colour. I think its name is 'malachite' - mum used to take me to a tiny cinema regularly - I was an only child, all other pregnancies aborted, because of poverty - and bad living conditions - so when i was born, I was a precious 'gift' to my Mum and she took good care of me - and then I absconded to Australia . . . . but visited as much as I could.
Happy Easter
