As you say we will only know if Shorts were covered in a few days time, but up until 3 days ago the Short position was being aggressively increasing those last few days of reporting. In my rough guide i estimate around 6.57 million shorts were set between $1.50 - $2.00, with an estimated average price of $1.64. At today's closing price of $2.29 that would equate to a paper loss of $4.2 million unless covered during today (not including cost of borrowing) - but presumably some of those Shorts are just part of a much larger position that may include Shorts with a price up to about $8. Regardless I'm sure whoever is Short currently would be thinking more about closing out now! The fact that there was 21 million Shorts in place 3 days ago suggests there's still a lot more unwinding to do
