The Star & Crown Casino paid huge amounts of money to obtain casino licenses yet they have a growing competitive disadvantage compared to licensed clubs.
And it's not just poker machines. A few years ago poker tournaments with 4 figure buyins and above were restricted to the Australian Casinos and Licensed Clubs were predominantly free or $50/$100 poker tournaments.
Fast forward to 2025 and both the NSW and Queensland State regulators are now allowing poker tournaments to enter of upwards and over $20,000. One poker series in Queensland last year at Southport Sharks awarded over 13 Million in prizemoney.
Unlike the casinos, there is no licensing of equipment, no licensing of staff and no AML controls. Meanwhile The Star can't even change foreign currency for overseas players and transferring funds to the casino has very stringent requirements.
Why can a poker machines patron barred at The Star due to Government pressure, have full freedom to play poker machines at licensed clubs down the road? Or a poker machine player timed out at the Star can walk into a licensed club and play for unlimited hours.
FYI the State Regulators in NSW & QLD are:
NSW
Independent Liquor & Gaming Authority (ILGA) - Until 2022 this authority monitored both casinos and licensed clubs. Now the two casinos are monitored by the NSW Independent Casino Commission (NICC). This hasn't worked out well for Star having two different bodies. Anything introduced by NICC should also immediately apply to ILGA in relation to poker machines. And surely ILGA should not be allowing multi million dollar poker series with no controls taking further business away from the Star.
QLD
Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation (OLGR)
Carded play coming but not yet introduced
Does not appear to be monitoring poker tournaments held in licensed clubs despite Queensland hosting the biggest of these type of events outside the casino.
As Star shareholders we should hold the State Casino and Licensed Regulators accountable for such an uneven playing field for poker machines, poker tournaments, licensing of staff and entry restrictions.
I hope Bally's will also.
