Hi oldgold--------------- I believe 'short selling' was brought in when Paul Keating was treasurer. He, again I believe he was involved in some way with Superannuation. Was thought that if 'big funds' soaked up 'big Coy shares and kept in Super Funds for many years and not traded, it would leave little for normal trading. So introduced ability for funds to lend out shares (? not sure of terminology or operation) so there would be 'supply'. Hence allowed a short selling process - which seems to have developed into - An all in operation !
Now -my opinion/understanding - the operators/funds saw $$$$$$$$$$ in this and so it took on a 'cancer type' trend -'spreading'. My description.
It Has become, in my opinion a 'pox (slang meaning) on investments) .
One example - amongst many, many - A small Coy was operating successfully in the gold mining area and needed a share issue to continue to success -the gold exploration area had produced good assays. It did the offer and some parasites saw an opportunity to start a sell down 'short the shares'. Small investors to medium had '0' chance to counteract and the shares fell. The Coy could not raise funds ............. !!!!
Now from a 'parasite's profit point of view' That was successful, but '0' else. From - a successful development of a gold mine with a number of benefits to locals, jobs, contributions to Australia, profits to investors - '0'.
So please tell me what good does 'short selling' do for the development of small Coys for the benefit of jobs and contributions to Australia. Blo--- Zero, and, in my opinion, our watchdogs, market operators, and big funds contribute nothing but pain and, in some cases contribute to loss of funds of those least able to do anything to combat such 'parasitic action'. Yes there are investors who invest in some funds that operate in the 'shorting area'. But I will bet that they are ignorant to, and have little knowledge of what damage it can do and does to our smaller Companies.
As I said - this is all in my opinion and from my understanding, all of which I am happy to be corrected.
"parasite" is purely my opinion from a meaning I found:-
Meaning :- 'an organism that lives in or on an organism of another species (its host) and benefits by deriving nutrients at the other's expense.'
My opinion - An operation that uses a process to profit by using -a host- to derive a profit operation from that host at other's expense.
You must do your own research and understanding - As I said 'all in my opinion- I have been wrong many times before'
