His unique contribution to research, which is reflected in the research agenda of his Cognitive Neurocomputing Laboratory, is to design, implement and use energy-efficient intelligent data processing systems in various industries with social relevance. He takes the brain as a source of inspiration for the development of learning algorithms, neuromorphic hardware and closed control loops. Axenie's goal is to develop intelligent systems with optimal energy requirements that can be scaled very well within the budget and make intelligence ubiquitous.
A recent example is an internationally award-winning solution for pedestrian safety. Using neuromorphic sensors and computers, the team led by Axenie designed, implemented and delivered an embedded, privacy-protecting system for detecting and tracking pedestrians on the roadside that works with only 5W day and night
