Ill counter a different view - if purely from the mathematical side.
Buybacks are great as they - mathematically - place greater value on PPS for those holding whats left (company value / no of shares = SP).
If there is buying pressure, reduced shares will often result in large SP swings on the upside, as (mathematically) less shares means greater price differences.
However, the opposite is also true - a lack of buying pressure, together with shorts, means stocks with less shares (mathematically) are easier to make money of going short.
IMO - buybacks arent really doing a lot for the current SP, and could even be encouraging the shorts and BOTS to play more games and make more money. Until such time we get that buying pressure, im still for any share buybacks but I dont believe they have/will assist the current SP situation.
