    You’re saying I should stand on the beach in Portsea and spot Tasmania with a telescope, and if I can’t, then that proves the Earth isn’t flat?

    Correct. That's exactly what I'm saying.

    But that ignores some pretty basic optics and atmospheric physics.

    I wasn't born yesterday. The distance from Portsea to Tasmania is virtually nothing. Any telescope you can buy in a shop would cover that distance without breaking a sweat.
    I have an 8-inch Dob sitting right next to me that can see objects that a literally millions of light years away. A gigantic lump of rock right next door is child's play.
