Yes the culture of big vehicles and long journeys combined with cheap gas ( relatively) will be a hard nut to crack in the US but there are new generations coming along continuosly who will be dealing with different realities and who are becoming much more environmentally aware and more cost conscious.
For me hybrids or plug-in hybrids give the worst of both worlds but they are probably a good interim solution where your driving long distances on a regular basis or regular towing is involved.
The average distance travelled in the US is only around 38 miles per day which can be made up with overnight charging at home for many, especially in cities , with the odd inconvenience when longer journeys are made...those inconveniences are getting lesser by the day in such a fast evolving sector where range and charging speeds are making rapid advances. The infrastructure will have to evolve as well.
However as a major producer of oil and the related vested interests, the EV transition in the US has plenty of headwinds...
Anyway in 9 days time I go to the dark side join the pure EV world, being retired range is not an issue , if a longer trip takes an extra 30 -60minutes a day then so be it, I'll just plan it around food stops, but 90% or more of our daily driving can be made up at home overnight or during the day using our existing solar system or the grid when required. It just requires a different mind set to how you travel.
Many households have two vehicles and that gives a lot of scope for using getting best use out of both.
