It backfired when Japanese bombers found them, torpedoed them, and sent both to the bottom, which completely changed the game.
The ships couldn’t outmanoeuvre the threat, and the British Navy quickly pulled back. Not long after, Singapore fell.
A classic example of how these massive, costly battleships were brought down by lightweight planes with cheap torpedoes.
