below are some extracts from a general article outlining the Paris Climate Agreement of 2015. It's worth revisiting briefly because the aim in 2015 was to try to limit global warming to 1.5 C degrees above pre-industrial levels and to keep it well below 2.0 C degrees this century.
but here we are in 2025; and as 2024 showed we already are at functional warming of 1.5 C degrees and forecasts by the world's leading scientists suggest we will be at a functional 2.0 C degrees well before 2050.
the climate catastrophe is unfolding considerably quicker than foreseen even 10 years ago.
yep @RedCedar it's a conspiracy of meteorologists. It's them to blame for identifying the existential problem facing the world from anthropogenic climate change.
if only scientists had stopped measuring changes in our environment we'd be okay.
Sadly, this seems to be the foolish position of the drongos and deniers of anthropogenic global warming on HC and elsewhere. Know-it-all, up-themselves Wallies without a skerrick of understanding of the science between them.
little more than puppets on a string, dancing to a tune played by their masters in the fossil fuels industry - the major source of the problem.
anyway, here's extracts from a ouece in The Diplomatist on Feb. 13, 2025, about the contents of the Paris Agreement.
THE DIPLOMATIST:
"The Paris Climate Agreement, adopted in 2015, is a landmark global accord to combat climate change and its devastating impacts. Central to the agreement is the collective commitment of 196 countries.
"The deal limits global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, with a more ambitious goal of keeping it within 1.5°C. The significance of the Paris Agreement and the critical importance of limiting warming to 1.5°C is highly relevant in the present ambience.
.......
"The 1.5°C target is not arbitrary; it is grounded in extensive scientific research. Studies from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reveal that even a half-degree difference between 1.5°C and 2°C can result in significantly more severe consequences for the planet and humanity.
"For example, at 2°C of warming, the risk of extreme heatwaves, prolonged droughts, intense storms, and rising sea levels increases dramatically.
"The effects of exceeding 1.5°C are particularly dire for low-lying island nations and coastal communities, where rising sea levels threaten to displace millions of people. Thus, the 1.5°C target represents a lifeline for the most vulnerable populations, offering a chance to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change."
......
"The difference between 1.5°C and higher levels of warming represents a tipping point for many ecosystems and communities. Every fraction of a degree avoided translates to lives saved, ecosystems preserved, and livelihoods secured.
"The Paris Agreement’s focus on 1.5°C is a recognition of the need to act decisively to protect current and future generations from the worst impacts of climate change."
......
"However, current global policies and actions are failing. Recent reports indicate that, without significant acceleration in climate action, the world is on track to exceed 2 °C in temperature by the end of the century. This underscores the urgency of strengthening national commitments under the Paris Agreement and ensuring accountability through transparent monitoring and reporting mechanisms."
