Always hard to say with any certainty if a high price level is excessive.
For BHP, my take on it is that it depends on your view of the China growth story. If that continues on at a reasonable rate for a number of years, as seems quite likely right now, that BHP and other selected resource stocks will continue to benefit with rising revenues and likely rising stock price and dividends for investors.
Holding BHP and other selected resource stocks is an easy way to buy in on the China growth story, and few fund managers and individual investors will not want to be holding this stock.
I am in from low 8's and have held my core position since then but leveraged it with some small options plays from time to time.
If in doubt, try playing it with a derivative position... higher risk, but much lower amount to invest...
