residents' group in southern Queensland's South Burnett region says it believes Cougar Energy has no grounds to appeal against the decision to shut down its coal seam gasification (CSG) project at Kingaroy.

The State Government ordered the company's Kingaroy trial to close in January on environmental grounds.

But Cougar Energy says the Department of Environment and Resource Management's investigation was flawed and it will appeal against the decision.

Gary Tessman from the Kingaroy Concerned Citizens Group says he expects the appeal to be rejected.

"The amounts were only very small but I mean they only burnt a small piece of coal too,' he said.

"When you take all that, when you magnify that by a few thousand times it does become quite concerning.

"I can't see any grounds anywhere in their report or anywhere that they've got any grounds to really appeal on.

"I can't see why they really even started this whole process, let alone trying now to appeal it after what has happened."

The department says it will examine Cougar's appeal before making a final decision.
