    Not necessary so, although it can be.

    Not every woman wants men drooling over them as a sex object. Not every woman is that insecure or limited.

    Personally, I do not believe self-respect requires such measures as covering one's head with a head scarf however a head scarf can be a symbol of self-respect.

    If one has travelled in countries such as Indonesia & Malaysia, there is nothing repressive about a head scarf.

    Often, they can be quite empowering & beautifying.

    It all depends on the culture really (eg. Malaysian vs Arab)

    The repressiveness one observes is often Arabic rather than the head scarf per se.

    Women in traditional Jewish & Christian societies also wore head scarfs.
