I don't think private health insurance is actually a very good deal in Australia, I self insure & use the public system.
i,e I save what I would pay in premiums each year into a high interest saving account & then draw down on it if I need to pay for a scan etc.
Of course it depends on how healthy you are etc.
In 15 years I've spent less than $9K on things I could claim on private medical & that includes $7.5K for a dental implant!
Premiums over that time would have been $30K+
