Gives you 9W, replaces 50W halogen. Same brightness, pleasant light, much longer life, energy cut by 80%.
Need a low wattage LED driver (transformer) for them to work efficiently. Do not buy these from Asia without checking with your electrician. To begin with, you will need large terminals that will fit loop in-loop out mains wiring.
Halogen downlights are an absolute horror - they reach temperatures in excess of 300+ C and are often a cause of fires. NSW fire brigade will tell you all about them on their web site. I believe they may be banned soon for good.

Luckily, LEDs are a real alternative and IMO much better than CFL lights.
