This month we have added Fletcher Building (FBU) to our High Conviction list. We view
FBU as the best positioned and best-value stock across our Building Materials coverage
universe. While we maintain a Buy recommendation on Pacific Brands (PBG) given
its attractive valuation, we have removed it from our high conviction list. With macro
headwinds clearly visible (rising raw material costs, particularly cotton, and a tight labour
market in China), the outlook is more muted than previously thought. We have reviewed
our West African exploration stories after the recent Indaba Mining Conference in Cape
Town. We remain comfortable with the upside for Bassari Resources, which is exploring
the 70km of gold-mineralised structure in Senegal. However, the alluvial gold operation
is taking longer than the company anticipated to achieve break-even production, and
the evaluation of the Makabingui target and other hard-rock areas is proving more
problematic than we had anticipated. We suspect that the share price may stagnate in the
absence of positive news in the short term, and therefore remove Bassari from the High
Conviction list and switch to Burey Gold.
Burey Gold (BYR) - BYR has a plus 1 million ounce low grade gold resource at
Mansounia in Guinea, which underpins the market valuation. The first program of
exploration drilling at Balatindi, also in Guinea, and following up previous drilling which
intersected Iron Oxide Copper Gold Uranium (IOCGU) mineralsiation, has been logged
and sampled. Red rock alteration and some visible copper mineralisation is reported,
however analytical results are yet to be received. Strong positive results are expected to
drive the share price higher.
