We're in a supermoon cycle, which happens every 18-19 years, meaning the Moon is its closest to the Earth, exerting maximum gravitational force. This affects the land or crust as well as the tides, cyclones etc, so we've had cyclones, earthquakes, volcanos and wild weather generally. It peaks in an extreme supermoon cycle next weekend, when the Moon will be closest to Earth in 19 years. We'll be able to see how big it is with our own eyes. It makes sense that if gravity is exerted heavily on the Earth, weak crust points may rupture, causing earthquakes. There's also another possible explanation, one alluded to by Jesus in the Garden of Gethsamene, when he was asked what would be the signs of the time of the end. He mentioned a great earthquake.
