If you read all the articles the "temporary" closing of the reactors in Germany "for assessment" (differing numbers but the most common is 8 of the older reactors) is likely to be a mix of political positioning and safety. Certainly the world would have to agree to reassess the safety systems as a result of Japan's events as well as reassess the older designs.

Nothing wrong with continual reassessments and validation of safety system to ensure a more positive future but I am sure there will be plenty of speculators out there giving the "temporary" closures a different spin.
