Notice how propaganda works, change the negative term "mercenary" to a neutral term contractor and everyone just says to themselves thats OK then, nothing interesting here, and forgets about it.
Another "mercenary' aspect of the current situation is that the is a shortage of americans stupid enough for the military(they love to cheer their military from their armchairs though) so would be immigrants are offered a green card for serving in the US military. There's no shortage of stupidity so looks like the US will be fighting for years to come.
