I don't think Australia's population density is even remotely an issue for building nuclear reactors.
The main issues are cost (coal is 20-50% cheaper) and lack of political will (pandering to the various factions of the "green" movement - how ironic!) The Liberal Party, I believe, are ready to get behind nuclear power but as it would be such a long-term venture, bi-partisan support is a necessity.
Nuclear power was planned to be raised as a policy issue at the Labor national conference later this year, but the accident in Japan will probably put the shutters on this, and any thought of Labor supporting nuclear power in the next couple of years.
