'NEW DEVELOPER' not welcome in Mt Kare

A few weeks after Mining Minister John Pundari transferred the tenement licence over Mt Kare gold reserves EL 1093 things have changed a different developer is trying to move in.
And this has angered the resource owners who say the new entrant, Indochine is not welcome nor the man behind it, anywhere near Mt Kare.
According to an article in the Australian Financial Review newspaper, a former manager of Kingsgate Consolidated but who has now been made CEO of another company, Indochine, was trying to get that company into Mt Kare.
Union Pacific and Summit Development were granted the exploration licence by Minister Pundari on February 18.
Spokesman of the Mt Kare landowners said the new company and the person promoting its interest in the resource are not welcome and any attempt and any attempt anywhere near the resourse area.
Following that transfer, the landowners said they were prepared and expected work to commence but the latest turn of events has set the whole process back a long while.
"We urge the minister to withdraw the licence".
EL 1093 was for over two decades in the hands of Madison who then went under liquidation. The transfer of the licence also included liabilities imcurred by the Madison which included a bill of K2 Billion from the landowners themselves.
Mr Bronston was of the view that Indochine was trying to avoid those liabilities but warned that the gold project will not be developed by any firm believes it can simply shed that responsibility.
"Indochine cannot go into Mt Kare without settlimg the liabilities". he said.
He has instead called to grant special mining leases to individual landowners in the area who can venture into mechanical alluvial mining with any interested outside partners while awaiting a 'more credible' company to develop the resource.
Mt Kare is less than 10 kilometers from the world class Porgera Gold Mine located in a border region between Enga and the new Hela Province.
It was the centre of attention in 1986/7 at the height of a gold rush when alluvial miners, prospectors and gold buyers went in there to make a fortune.

"Mt Kare landowners want servises before mining"
    by Paulus Kombea.

The Mt Kare landowners have raised their concern to the Government and the miner to install vital servises before mining starts.
Peter Tendeke. principal landowner said Mt Kare is situated imto one of th iscolated terrains bordering the Southern Highlands provinces and that the people have been denied basic services.
These are governments prerogative resposibilities to serve the people who need the most in the isolated areas of the country said Tendake.
He said due to no government presence the peiople have resorted to tribal fights and criminal activities leading to social unrest
Mr Tendake said one of the major concern for the people now is to build a road acces through to Mt Kare connecting the two provinces.
He said this would enable people to adhere to servises from nearby government stations in education, health, and enabling law enforcement agencies to contain the law and order situation.
"The Government and the developers must first establish road link, education, health and law enforcement agencies and later talk about miming our land".
Bernard Agiru, chairman of Mt Kare umbrella Hetapula Association has shares the same sentiment prioritizing the road accessabilty as the major concern for the people.
Mr Agiru said 25 years has gone since the first exploration in 1993 the government has noticed that the people needed servises but took no interest in our plight.
The government has failed lot of the landowners in providing such servises therefore; we ask the government give these servises first before the minerals were mined.
