Farmers take on iron ore haulage
Gindalbie Metals says it is engaging with farmers in mid-west Western Australia by employing them to haul truckloads of iron ore from its Karara mine to a siding, north of Morawa.
The iron ore is then loaded onto rail carts and transported to Geraldton Port for export.
The company's first shipment of haematite iron ore will leave the port on Thursday after being loaded yesterday.
Michael Weir from Gindablie says up to 20 local farmers are taking part, which he hopes will continue into the future.
"We had the option of getting [a] dedicated haulage contractor to do that work or to get more of the local community involved, it turned out there was a whole lot of farmers in the region who had equipment available that was being under-utilised at the moment so it was an ideal way to provide them with some work," he said.
